5 Techniques for Overcoming Fear of Failure

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

– Winston Churchill

failure is one of the biggest detriments for not only business people but everyone

it cut across all aspects of our lives.

However,  let’s look at just a few historical failures. JFK failed the bar exam twice.

Mark Twain, Henry Ford, P.T. Barnum, Milton Hershey, and Henry Heinz all went

bankrupt. Walt Disney was fired because of a lack of new ideas. Winston Churchill

flunked 8th grade.

In overcoming fear of failure, here are 5 strategies you could adopt that will

transform your life.

Reframe Your Goals to Meet Current Reality: First, re-frame failure by shifting

your goals.  Expand your goal to include learning something new and you will never

technically “fail” because there is always something to be learned.

Pitfalls: Since you have re-framed your goals, then anticipate new obstacle. So, the

only way is to visualize the entire possible obstacles and solution that might come

your way is by studying and going for solitude.

Believe System Syndrome: Here you need to separate your thought system that

are inherent in you which is associated with failure e.g mean “I am not good enough”,

“I will never be successful as an entrepreneur”, “My team is awful”, etc. Try to

separate the story from the facts.  Facts:  Product launch generated N120,000 of

revenue as compared to goal of N1,200,000.  Story:  My father was right, I’ll never

make it on my own. I’m a loser. Hence, overcome it by replacing those believes with

positive responses such as  “I’m willing to take risks, I learn from my mistakes and

move on.”

Lesson in the Failure: The best response to perceived failure is to ask oneself

these three powerful questions: What did I learn from this event? How can I grow as a

person from this experience? What did I gain about this event?

Admit that Fear is part of the Equation: Many of us allow fear to paralyze us because

we don’t like feeling fear. But if you simply allow yourself to feel the fear when it shows up,

you will notice that it quickly dissipates and suddenly the situation feels more manageable.

So, just follow the above strategies and see how you can apply them to your daily lives.

PS: If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original. So, if you

are still waiting for all the conditions to be right to take action or you have taken action but due

to one failure or another gave up then you are not ready because it is only those who dare to

fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. However, I know that you are ready and willing to take the

risk, get certainty in an uncertain world and burn all bridges of failure by calling
