Timothy Here Again,
Frankly, some accountants are either ignorant or reluctant about their IT skills. As we all know, computing devices play an important role in the growth of our modern economy. Being proficient at Basic accounting, interpretation of the financial statement, tax laws etc is not sufficient. Having a sound knowledge of accounting software goes a long way to help cope and manage the inevitable changes Information technology will bring along.
For most of the accountants, who are looking for employment or looking at getting a better position in either small or large corporations, 99% of these large corporations do not follow the traditional pen and paper system.
Every transaction today is done through the internet and all such transactions are recorded in a Both Basic Accounting Software and ERP system. So, as an accountant, you must definitely know how to make use of ERP systems, such as Tally, SAP, Sage300, Sage Pastel, MS Dynamics Navision and other SME Accounting Software like Sage50, Quickbooks etc.
Furthermore, you must also be good at DataBase Management Softwares. MS Access is a good Database management software for recording of clients, customers, suppliers, inventory information etc. Having the knowledge to access and manipulate these data, is very crucial for an accountant.
Similarly, you can’t escape from Microsoft Office. It’s extremely important for an accountant to learn everything related to Excel, Word, Project etc. learn how to use Excel, using the right formulas, then you will not only double your productivity but also have more confidence in yourself and character.
Advanced Excel and Financial Modelling are sincerely a special one, and every Accountant is required to learn this. It is highly recommended to learn PowerPoint too. Being an Accountant, you shall be responsible with presentation duties to your boss, management at Boardroom meetings and even your clients. So, it is key not to ignore PowerPoint.
Hence, knowing what you now know, I want you to do a self-analysis check on your current skills set and ask yourself that:
1.If you were to be an employer, can my current skill double or triple the productivity of the organization?
- With my current IT skills, can I compete favourably if anything happens to my current Job?
- If anything happens my job or career, am I still relevant in the marketplace?
- Can my Accounting IT skills make me indispensable?
