Are you still Relevant?

Timothy Here,

Learning ‘how to learn’ is life’s most important skill. Tony Buzan

Recently, I was coming from an important meeting in Lekki Phase II,

I came across an old friend somewhere around Philip junction at Ojota,

Lagos. Although it was a dramatic one because he batched my car

but it was a little scratch. He is a big guy using Lexus GX 470 2016

model so we had to settle it in the men’s way.

My sincere apologies for the digression. We exchanged

pleasantries and after some deep conversation, I asked him where

he is currently working because he told me

before we lost contact that he will be changing his Job.

But to my surprise, he is still working with the same company and I

asked what happened? To cut the long story short, he has added

so much value to himself. B He is now a Finance Director of a

company that makes over 5 billion naira annual turnover.

Trust me, I never fail to ask what helped him remain relevant in this

current economy as a paid employee. His responses

are what we will examine below.

1.Knowledge of Accounting Software: according to him he does

not wait for change, he initiated it and under such circumstance, he is

in control. By implication, he has gone for many training on accounting

software so as to remain relevant. You should seriously consider

refreshing your skills through self-learning or by enrolling in a seminar

if you will have the time and if not, acquire the relevant skill through

self-education . Simply put get the tutorial training.

2. Advanced Excel Skills: According to him, any accounting professional

must have advanced skills in Excel.  Some functions you should know in

Excel are VLookup, pivot tables and macros etc;

3.Attention to Detail and Knowledge of Current Taxation Laws and

Accounting Procedures: If you want to be a good accountant, attention to

detail skills are crucial for you. You have to be able to pay attention to the

small things.

4.Communication Skills: According to him, he bought many materials on effective

communication because he does not have the time for seminar. Hence, as an

accountant, you must be able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

PS: it is possible to fly without an aeroplane but impossible to fly without knowledge and

skill. There is nothing like sitting on the fence. It is either you grow on a daily basis or

deplete then become irrelevant which will lead to loss of job, depression, family issues,

health issues etc. However, I know that you a professional and would always take what

will make you better, very serious. Hence, become relevant by getting
