New Year resolutions: why I don’t set them

Timothy Here Again,

The New Year has become more than just a holiday for many of us. We look at New Year’s Eve as not only a celebration of the year, but a chance for a fresh start – that’s why we create resolutions.

Some people resolve to focus more on their health, while others vow to make strides in their career or finance. Although we go into the new year with the best of intentions to make good on these goals, it doesn’t take long for many people to give up on their New Year’s resolution and continue the RAT RACE they are comfortable with.

Why?

If you’re looking to make a change in your life, why does it feel so difficult to stay focused? New Year’s resolutions may come about once a year, but how you make and follow through on them says something about your goal-setting process.

Why are you choosing your New Year’s resolutions? How many times have you made them, and which of your resolutions have you actually achieved? It all comes back to the way you set goals.

Goals, not resolutions, are the key to long-term growth and success. And the secret to setting compelling goals is knowing why it is you want what you want – finding purpose and meaning in your goals.

WHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FAIL

Many New Year’s resolutions fail because you’re simply looking for a new experience, instead of real change. It’s easy to say you’d like to have a better job or promotion, but what are you really committed to doing in order to make that resolution a reality?

Are you actually just talking or expressing yourself, or do you truly want to sincerely transform your career?

You often make resolutions in the spirit of celebration, with no real thought into what it will take to achieve them. Then, a few weeks or months into the new year, you give up. Then you feel terrible about our lack of progress and might turn to even worse behaviour.
